US President Barack Obama has congratulated Nigerians as the country marks its 53rd Independence Day anniversary.
In a statement issued by the US Secretary of State John Kerry, Obama wished Nigerians a "safe and prosperous future".
"A warm friendship connects the Nigerian and American people, reflecting our shared values of democracy, economic growth, security, respect for human rights and the rule of law."
It described the partnership between the countries as "strong" and quoted a proverb to illustrate the cordial relations between both countries:
"If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
Kerry reiterated the American government's commitment to deepening relations with Nigeria in the areas of education, employment and creating opportunities for all
