Libyan prime minister Ali Zeidan was kidnapped by former rebels from a Tripoli hotel.
This comes after the US captured top al-Qaeda suspect Abu Anas al-Libi this past weekend for his alleged involvement with the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
According to the Telegraph, following US Secretary of State John Kerry’s confirmation that Libya was involved in Abu Anas al-Libi’s capture, the gunmen believed that Zeidan was involved.
The rebel group who kidnapped him is one of several militias that act independently and contribute to the nation's continued state of instability following the 2011 revolution.
Zeidan is viewed as a liberal who has strong ties to the West which is one of the reasons why he may have been a target.
The prime minister has since been freed with no explanation as of yet.
